Are you important?

In my home town as a child of the fifties, I remember my mother, a pillar of the community without a conviction to her name, telling me that Police were a "necessary evil" because the alternative was so much worse. "Mind you," she said,"you can't trust them to look after your interests unless you're important." She left it at that.

Half a century later, this year's MardiGrass reminded me of those words.
